CFL light bulbs aren't just for use in normal light fixtures. Thanks to mass production and a large adoption due to the lightbulbs getting cheaper, manufacturers are making different forms of these bulbs.
Here are just a few of the places I use Compact Fluorescent Lamps:
Day/Night lights:
Phillips makes a light with a built-in day/night switch. This way, I can leave the lights on without the light actually BEING on. And at dusk, the light comes on. This is great for security reasons.
Bedside lamp:
Because these lightbulbs are a LOT cooler than your normal light bulb, I use them in the lamps beside my bed.
This means my room doesn't get hot from the bulb (which you'd notice if it was right next to your head).
And, it also means I can adjust the lamp without fear of being burnt...
Decorative Garden Lights:
Once again, due to the energy efficiency of these bulbs, I use them for lighting up the garden.
This means I can have more of these bulbs without fear of running up my electricity bills too high.
Remember: 1 CFL bulb = 5 incandescent light bulbs.
